Tag 68 (Sonntag)

Hier mein heutiger Aufsatz über Kontraste in Of Mice and Men  :)

ich hätte ja nie gedacht, dass ich je länger schreibe, als die angegebene Minimalwortanzahl...
Have fun reading it!!

Of Mice and Men

"A few miles south of Soledad, the Salinas River drops in close to the hillside bank and runs deep and green. The water is warm too, for it has slipped twinkling over the yellow sands in the sunlight before reaching the narrow pool.“ These are the first swo sentences to read in Of Mice and Men. Author John Steinbeck uses one the most remarkable stylistic devices in his novel already in the beginning. He uses strong colors in a description to create a contrast. Instead of simply describing the scenery, he makes it more interesting for the reader. He uses the impressions that he just imparted to the reader to create a catchy opening everyone will remember by the time he wants him to. The stylistic device of the contrast is not only important for images, but is also a beloved and often used way to express something. It is also very popular in more modern literature.

By using them in his novel John Steinbeck helps the reader to get to know his characters and to understand their behaviour. The contrasts reveal the protagonist's strenghts and weaknesses, making them unique. Lennie, for example, loves soft things and especially mice, which he "could pet with his thumb while walking along“ (6), but on the other hand, he is so strong, that he always kills them by grabbing them to hard when they try to bite him. He just cannot let go of soft things, when he is scared. That is also the reason, why the had to flee from Weed, because Lennie "just wanted to feel that girl's dress“ (11) and when "she jerked back he held on like it was a mouse“ (11). One of his strongest contrasts is also that he can be completely normal talking to someone like Curley's wife, but as soon as he touches something soft and an incident happens, he does not know what to do any more and just holds on and shakes it. He is like a little kid, not understanding most of the things told him, but he realizes that he killed a creature.

But Steinbeck does not only use contentual contrasts, he also works with contrasted parallelisms and different registers to make the reader more attentive about the content.
The most striking examples in this novel are the way Lennie and George speak and the author's idea of beginning and ending the story. To begin with the not so noticeable, it is important to analyze and characterize the protagonist's language and linguistic habits. The way of speaking can tell us a lot about the speaking person. In Of Mice and Men they are mostly speaking informal English or Slang. While Lennie is always speaking very informal, George, the smarter one, can speak more formal if he needs to. He made use of this while talking to their boss the first time and telling that Lennie "can do anything you tell him. He's a good skinner. He can rassel grain bags, driva a cultivator. He can do everything“ (22). The more striking contrast is the big parallelism between beginning and end. Steinbeck beginns both paragraphs with the "deep and green“ (1;99) Salinas River and how the scenery looks like. But the difference is that at the first time "two men emerged from the path“ (3) and in the end "Lennie appeared out of the bush“ (100). The author begins and ends the book at the same place, but in a completely different way. And that is the contrast, the reader first recognizes in the end. It is a big parallelism hiding the contrast. First the walk there together and ultimately Lennie comes there alone and instead of both having the hope of a new life, George kills Lennie. The parallels make the reader think that everything is going to be the exact same again and thereby makes the finish hyperbolic.

By working with contrasts the author can influence his reader's reactions and emotions. He can make his message clearer and stronger. The readers experience the story more intense and afterwards think more about it.Same as colors in our visual sensation, constrasts used as stylistic devices are essential for good stories and the way we assimilate things.

Hope you like it!
