Of Mice and Men
The novel Of Mice and Men by
John Steinbeck is one his most famous works. It emerged during the so
called “Great Depression” in the 1930’s. The book shows the
situation that existed during this time and begets the working
conditions of simple men in America's southern states.
While Lennie and George's life and
friendship is in the foreground during the beginning of the book,
Steinbeck shows more of a typical worker's life as the story moves
on. The reader gets to know the characters better and starts to
understand the individuals in their own, special ways. That is also
what makes it clear that Lennie is mentally disabled and not able to
survive in a modern society on his own, so this is the reason why he
is travelling with George. At the point of the story where they kill
Candy's old dog to release it from his pain, it captures one of the
most discussed themes in our society. Should people be released from
their pain by being killed? When is a life really worth living it?
Deciding about another one's life by killing him as a punishment is
still common in several parts of the world. As the book is full of
parallelism, there is a big one that catches up exactly the things
mentioned above.
To give him the opportunity to die in
peace and with joyful thoughts; George kills Lennie before Curley can
do it in his anger. He makes him think about positive things and
shoots him directly in the back of his head so that he can hardly
feel anything. In this case it is a salvation for Lennie because he
would have had severe problems, caused by his disability, to
integrate completely in the society and especially start a new life
after accidently killing Curley's wife.
During the last pages people with
strong historical connections might have had the thought of the
nazi-German 'euthanasia-project' in which they 'released' more than
250 000 mentally or physically disabled people 'from their pain'. In
their propaganda they spreaded the idea of lives unworthy to live.
This is the same as Jews, they called out these people as 'not arian
race'. They were deported in busses and brought to special
establishments where they should be taken care of. Their families
got regular letters about their condition that said that they are
fine. After some time, they did not receive any more post and a few
weeks later they finally got a letter telling that their son or their
daughter died of undefinied health issues. The people they wanted to
'release' were brought there and registered with numbers. That is
only one aspect that shows us how the Nazis treated human beings. The
other one is that they were treated like subhumans while they were
still alive. The time they spent in their home they got excluded from
society and when they came to these special houses they had to fear
the 'deathman' would come for them every moment if they did not get
killed right away.
Lennie must have had this fear the moment he realized he killed
Curley's wife by shaking her. He must have been very afraid. So the
question is: should any humanbeing be able to decide over someone
else's life. Should anyone have the possibility to decide what kind
of a life is worth to live it? There is only one answer to these
questions: NO. My life is my own decision and that is the way it
should always be and should always have been. It is like our
fundamental law says: 'Everyone is equal and must be treated
equally.'
Vermisse euch,
euer Hühnchen
